Above me, hot air balloons hang from the ceiling and I realize that I’m no longer certain where I am within the context of the complex. A small crowd gathers to watch the figures move to the music, which reverberates loudly throughout the exhibit space. Inspired by the show, I convert a few of my dollars into gold tokens and feel like a child again, sprinting between displays, depositing my coins and watching the collection spring to life.

Rooms range from double queen rooms to executive whirlpool suites. What began as a basic house has now turned into a full complex. The House on the Rock Inn is a popular place for families to stay while visiting the House. There’s a sizable parking lot, so you’ll be able to find easy parking unless you come on a very busy day. The attraction cautions visitors that its location in Spring Green is rural, and therefore cell phone service may be limited in the area.

There are a few giant rooms with mechanical orchestras that operate on their own. It is literally a full-sized orchestra playing music just for you as you walk past. • Wheelchairs and scooters cannot be longer than 54″ to fit in our lifts. Motorized scooters need to be fully charged to get through all 3 sections.

About Quirky Travel Guy

Jordan built the house as a weekend retreat and never intended it to be a tourist attraction. However, people kept coming to see the architectural wonder they had heard about. The 14-room house is the original structure of what is now a complex of many buildings, exhibits and garden displays.

As someone who has visited the House on the Rock a half dozen times, I have learned that on each trip to the magnificent house of wonders, I see something that I didn’t notice on the visit prior. There are so many unsuspecting gems and strangely beautiful collectives that you’ll find you take a new perspective with each visit. Whether it’s to marvel at the sparkle of the world’s largest carousel or to be awe-struck by the 200-foot sea creature, there’s something for everyone in the family to see here. The 14-room house is the original structure of what is now a complex of many buildings, exhibits, and garden displays. A walk through the Infinity Room extending an astonishing 218 feet, leads to awe-inspiring views of the valley below.

The retreat was only the beginning.” It goes on to discuss the “eclectic, exotic, and whimsical exhibits” on display inside. The House on the Rock is a tourist attraction located between the cities of Dodgeville and Spring Green, Wisconsin. Opened in 1959,[2] it is a complex of architecturally distinct rooms, streets, gardens, and shops designed by Alex Jordan Jr.

Heritage of the Sea — a blimp hangar if empty — houses a 200-foot-long sea creature (a whale?) battling an octopus (maybe?), its edges lined with multi-story levels and maritime memorabilia. Eventually, section two leads to the magnificent carousel room, the piece de resistance that somehow isn’t the end. To exit, you’ll walk through the red-carpeted throat of a demon. Alex Jordan built the structure atop a rock column in 1959 (some say as an 'up yours' to neighbor Frank Lloyd Wright). He then stuffed the house to mind-blowing proportions with wonderments, including the world's largest carousel, whirring music machines, freaky dolls and crazed folk art.

Alex Jordan’s awesome retreat built atop a chimney of rock opened to the public in 1960. The House on the Rock is a surreal, sometimes nightmarish journey through what feels like a mad man’s strange and obsessive imagination. Construction on the bizarre attraction began when Alex Jordan Jr. decided to built a house atop Deer Shelter Rock on land he didn’t even own at the time.

Three prestigious golf course architects took advantage of the spectacular natural surroundings to design and sculpt our 27 holes. The House on the Rock Resort is located just a short drive from the Attraction and offers customizable Tour and Stay packages that include admission to the Attraction or golf along with an overnight stay. A dazzling display of music machines including the Blue Room with a mechanically operated orchestra and the overpowering oriental music of the Mikado. Tickets will be available for pick-up at Will Call stations.

Toys and carousels and giant sculpted sea creatures and dolls and Rube Goldberg machines. Take a tour of the 800-acre National Historic Landmark known as the Taliesin Estate. Home to six Frank Lloyd Wright-designed structures, including his personal home, this property offers an inspiring look into the life of the Wisconsin son hailed as America’s greatest architect. We recommend at least 3 hours to see the Ultimate Experience and that our Guests arrive no later than 2 pm. Arriving later in the day will limit your admission options and you may need to move through the complex more quickly than you would like. Certain areas begin to close as early as 2 pm and other routes may be shortened.

Built atop a lofty stone column, House on the Rock is an extensive collection of one man’s imagination come to life. Jordan sold the house in 1988 to a friend who continued building on the site, adding to the collections of knick-knacks and exhibits featuring authentic pieces, reproductions, and specially-made examples of everything. The most recent addition is the "Spirit of Aviation", a collection of large model airplanes in a themed room. Another exhibit, the "Transportation Building", is under construction, but visitors can walk through and view the work in progress. Section two can take a solid two hours, if for no other reason than the fact that you’ll be kept busy trying to unsear your brain.
